PH VFX x SCAD Week Ten - Beware the Obelisk!

It's week 10, pencils down! For our final video, I put together a title card and credits sequence to wrap up our project in one neat package.

My contributions to make this possible:

  • Storyboarding. Of course, to make directing and production smooth, I created illustrations of exactly how I envisioned our shots. Our final product ended up getting pretty close to our storyboards! Shot 2 was the one that changed the most between the two.

  • Directing. Beware the Obelisk was my idea and concept, so my team looked to me for directorial and theming decisions.

  • Editing. Because I'm so comfortable with video editing software, I stepped up to put together our clean cut. I also was responsible for the timing of our video, which I finalized early on so we knew exactly how many frames we were going to work with.

  • Photography. I used techniques learned in lighting class to create the HDR we needed.

  • Videography. I rented the camera and handled it through the entirety of production.

  • Graphic Design. Title card by me, little credit icons by me, the typography and color theming took thought as well. Also, the black glyph seen on our flag is my original design.

  • CG Modeling. The obelisk 3D model and flag 3D model were created by me. The flagpole was Yachan's work, although I did provide her with the reference image to convert into 3D.

  • Shading and Texturing. This also includes having to UV texture and treat the models I created in Maya. In Substance Painter, I created textures for our flag, flagpole, and obelisk with multiple layers of detail. The stone base for the obelisk, however, was textured by Jadyn.

  • FX. In Houdini, of course, I researched and implemented new techniques to show visually interesting cracks spreading across our actor's face. I ended up using a draw curve tool projected onto the 3D geometry of Jacob's face provided by Jadyn's alembic.

  • Lighting and Rendering. CG Rendered in Arnold, FX rendered with Mantra. Of course, it wasn't enough to just hand my 3D models off to the compositors! They need footage! Using my HDR, I placed a spotlight in the same direction as the sun to give the obelisk an accurate shadow. Sukhmeet said he would help me with the lighting for shot 1 & 4, but that never came to fruition. I ended up providing him with my Maya scene so he could use my lighting.

  • Sound. With my past experience with audio editing, as an added bonus for our group I went ahead and added relevant sound effects to our video. As my team members would agree, it led to quite an unbelievable difference in the emotional impact of our video.
