PH VFX x SCAD Week Two - Storyboarding and Planning

Updated: Nov 15, 2022

Kieran Radley from Team Mystic reporting in for the second week of our collaboration class with mentorship generously provided by Powerhouse VFX. In this second week, our talented team worked together to iron out a VFX project concept that was very ambitious, yet still reasonably within our talents. I'd like to introduce you to... Beware the Obelisk!

I knew we had to create a storyboard, detailing precisely what our shots would be. We don't want any guesswork whatsoever during production, as to not waste anyone's time. So, I elaborated on my simple stick figure scribbles and created detailed storyboards.

To give a crazy, cursed effect in the eyes of my illustrated character, I had fun creating this crazy scribbled image in Photoshop.

I created this gif in After Effects using the Particle World effect to demonstrate to my team what I had in mind for our CG augmentation. The actor's eyes would turn dark, and there would be different runes and symbols coming out of his head.

Before this idea, our group was determined to accomplish the first prompt. We were discussing a natural disaster being our weather change. It would check the boxes of intricate compositing work for Jadyn and Yachan, and a waving piece of cloth for Sukhmeet. However, when Powerhouse themselves were presenting the two prompts to our entire class, THEY seemed much more passionate about the second prompt, CG augmentation of an actor.

This VFX project sees an actor touching a cursed obelisk on the beach, then becoming infected by a curse which causes his arm to disintegrate. The tracking with Keen Tools would be utilized in the curse spreading up his arm and eventually to his face.
